Freedom Square

Freedom Square is the central square of the city. It is located in the Oktyabrsky district at the intersection of Lenin Street with Zamkova Street and Frunze Avenue. To the east, the square is adjoined by the Frunze Park of Culture and Recreation. In terms of area Freedom Square is a rectangle with the size of 70 x 82 meters, and accordingly, its size is 5.74 hectares.

Located on the territory of the former Lower Castle, until the end of the 1950s, it was notable for the St. Nicholas Cathedral standing there (in fact, hence its pre-revolutionary name - Sobornaya), the former monastery church of the Jesuits. Now most of the historical buildings on the square have been destroyed, its western border is formed by park areas, and the administrative center of the city is nearby.
